Re: Two Bacharach/Anka Songs

Here`s the other song from that soundtrack performed/lip-synced/or something by Burt and Jackie on the usually egregious `Midnight Special.`

Re: Put Your Youtube.com Links Here! (if you want)

And from their second and lesser known (semi-) collaboration, `Breakwater Cat`, "Gone': https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bFXh-8VZkR4 JW wrote only half of the songs on this album and arranged none. It was largely dismissed as a misfired disco album by Webb fans. Although "Gone" is a re...

Study Proves the Obvious: Pop Becoming Less Complex

Or just plain dumber:

(Parenthetically, I cannot fathom why the trite Sedaka tune is offered as a last example of melodic complexity, but anyway...)

Re: Trains And Boats And Planes

I don`t hear any more "baked in" irony in `Wives...` than I do in `Wishin` & Hopin`, a similar sentiment. This was the default attitude in popular culture in the "mono and black & white" era. I`m not defending it and it was never reflective of reality, but it was the cult...

Re: Allyson Briggs - Promises, Prayers And Raindrops

Of all obscurities to relieve the tedium of yet another album of war-horses that no one could possibly need to hear again, why the two cited above? The first was composed in the early fifties before Burt had even developed his style; the second - from twenty years later - sounds like something dashe...

Re: Two Bacharach/Anka Songs

Maybe this could be the start of a new thread: Bacharach Songs That Sound Next To Nothing Like Bacharach. It would include anomalies like "Lisa" as well as utter astonishments like "Love Power." There are probably quite a number, especially from the "Carole Era" (whethe...

I`ll take the liner notes` word over my faulty memory. I haven`t owned this album for many years.

Re: Josh Roseman's 'Downtown NYC' jazz take on 'Land of Make Believe'

This track benefits from being arranged by Zorn, the obvious AACM aficionado than Zorn, the Klezmer student. Like another career-long wild card, Anthony Braxton, Zorn could be phenomenally imaginative or phenomenally self-indulgent. But, as Miles said, "If you don`t make mistakes, you ain`t try...

Re: Josh Roseman's 'Downtown NYC' jazz take on 'Land of Make Believe'

I didn`t think this was at all bad; in fact I found it to be quite respectful of the composition. I couldn`t say that about much of the Zorn project.

Re: Jimmy Webb performing on TV in 1968

Regarding the demo of this song mentioned above, there are four volumes of these available on Spotify under the title, Jimmy Webb, Legendary. All are very early songs and not all of his later quality. They are, however, must-listens for his fans.

Re: First recording of Loneliness Remembers What Happiness Forgets

But, at that time, they were still in breach of contract with Warners and Dionne for not producing her second album. Wouldn`t their first obligation legally as a team have been to make good on their Warners contract?

Re: First recording of Loneliness Remembers What Happiness Forgets

A couple of facts argue against an early rapprochement between Burt and Hal. Burt has admitted to "sulking for a couple of years" after the split; and much was made in 1993 of the "first Bacharach/David collaboration" in twenty years, "Sunny Weather Lover." It deserved ...

Re: First recording of Loneliness Remembers What Happiness Forgets

Paul, It has always been my understanding that the songs eventually appearing on the Mills album were those written prior to the `Lost Horizon` debacle and intended for Dionne`s second Warners album. No one has ever been able to tell me how Stephanie came by these songs given her inadequate range. S...
