Re: Dionne Warwick, The Doors, Jefferson Airplane from the O'Keefe Center 1967

There were a handful of tunes on the album that I liked...Be Aware, If You Never Say Goodbye, and I Just Have to Breathe (the tune on that album with that trademark sound) but otherwise, consider that only three original tunes were introduced on the album...Goodbye, Breathe, The Balance of Nature. E...

Re: Dionne Warwick, The Doors, Jefferson Airplane from the O'Keefe Center 1967

Blair, it's amazing that such a flop film as Lost Horizon could end so many careers both directly and indirectly. As far as the changes in Bacharach/David/Warwick's music, it was evident to Vince Aletti, who reviewed the album Dionne (1972) in the March 1972 issue of Rolling Stone and he references ...

Re: Dionne Warwick, The Doors, Jefferson Airplane from the O'Keefe Center 1967

The video here shows Dionne in her prime and this was right before I Say A Little Prayer was released. This has been seldom seen in its entirety since airing on the CBC in 1967. It illustrates in a nutshell what made the 1960s so unique music-wise. The telecast really mirrored what was heard on the ...

Cissy Houston versus Dionne Warwick and Burt Bacharach

In reference to the Cissy Houston post in the YouTube topic ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KQHF1OFhL9Q ) Myrna Smith and Estelle Brown are dead on the money...not only did the Sweet Inspirations record a version of Alfie...it was pretty bad...and Bacharach was not impressed when Cissy insisted on...

Re: Put Your Youtube.com Links Here! (if you want)

Makes perfect sense to me that Dee Dee would adopt Dionne's professional name...singers needed every break they could get in those days...Dee Dee was extremely talented (IMHO much more talented and genuine than Aretha Franklin) who struggled to get her big hit and it never came...she had some modera...

Re: End-Game

Blair, it's something that I have wished for for a few years. Surely Bacharach can conjure up something worthy for Dionne's diminished pipes. He wrote for some pretty scantly talented singers early in his career and even later and made them sound great and Dionne still has the technique and the poli...

Re: Dionne Warwick - From The Vaults

Thanks Blair...have just officially become a curmudgeon (there are some who will dispute the timing of this) and I decry that I have become old and out of sorts with the music industry as a whole and would like to hark back to a time when music was great FUN and interesting in its variety and comple...

Re: Dionne Warwick - From The Vaults

Dionne Warwick had no say in stopping the Rhino reissues. She relinquished her rights to her material when she became strapped for cash in 1991 and sold her 50% rights to her Scepter and WB recordings back to Warner (Bacharach/David retained the other 50%). These are the same rights she received as ...

Re: Dionne Warwick 1965-Singing Bacharach Arrangement

20th Century owed the publishing rights to Theme from Valley of the Dolls. They wanted a sure-fire hit and knew Dionne Warwick was on a hot-streak...she had just come off a huge hit with Alfie, peaking at #15 on the Hot 100 but that chart position belies its popularity, airplay and sales. Alfie was ...

Re: Dionne Warwick 1965-Singing Bacharach Arrangement

Yes, Bacharach farmed that out to Matz, et al, once he got so heavily involved in composing Promises, Promises beginning in 1967. The On Stage and In the Movies is the last album I know of where he arranged all the tunes composed by others. The one exception to that was his arrangement for Dionne's ...

Dionne Warwick 1965-Singing Bacharach Arrangement

Here is a 1965 film clip of Dionne Warwick singing Gershwin's "I Loves You Porgy" from her 1965 album Here I Am. Burt Bacachach did this interesting arrangement of the tune. He also did a killer arrangement of "Summertime" for her 1967 album On Stage and In Movies and one of my f...

Re: Question

Many times, tunes did have a cold ending but particularly in the 50s through the 80s when radio programmers favored tunes with three minutes or less run time, the tune was faded in the mix. Sometimes tunes were faded because they had no end. Bacharach used cold endings on several recordings as oppos...
