Re: Dionne's 23-Song Medley

Thanks, as always, B2B. It never occurred to me that it was more of a length issue than a musical issue, but that makes sense. The two times I've seen Dionne in concert, she sang for about 70-75 minutes, so including the half hour medley would leave room for little else. However, I think most fans w...

Re: Dionne's 23-Song Medley

I didn't intend to create yet another thread rehashing Dionne's "vocal decline," but I was genuinely curious about when the medley disappeared from her concerts and why. She sounded just as good singing it in 1990 as she did in 1980 (just compare Spain and Park West), so I imagine she coul...

Dionne's 23-Song Medley

Fans, does anyone know when Dionne officially dropped her legendary 23-song medley from her concerts? The latest instance I know of is from her 1990 Spain concert. Any ideas?

Re: Burt's Golden Age Within His Golden Age

Yes, Blair, I agree that my categories are a little rough and maybe even meaningless, but it is evident that Burt's style changed over the course of the decade in noticeable ways. Maybe it is better thought of as a "stylistic progression," as you said. Either way, I think that middle 60s p...

Re: "Looking With My Eyes": Hit or Miss?

Well, so far it's unanimous -- the song is a hit! I wonder why it wasn't actually a "hit." I guess, as Ron wrote, that it must have been too sophisticated for the average listener. Makes me wonder how a song like "Promises, Promises" managed to make a respectable showing on the c...

"Looking With My Eyes": Hit or Miss?

"Looking With My Eyes" ranks among Burt's most adventurous compositions, on par with challenging touchstones like "Promises, Promises" and "Is There Another Way to Love You." Yet, it's also strangely accessible, despite it's complexity. I don't think that anyone has eve...

Burt's Golden Age Within His Golden Age

I've written here before about how Here I Am is Dionne's best Scepter album, and, upon listening to it again yesterday, my opinion still stands. However, I've been thinking about Burt's golden age anew. I feel like the period could really be thought of as three roughly distinct moments. There is the...

Hal's Penthouse For Sale

Hal's penthouse is on the market: http://www.latimes.com/business/realest ... story.html. Pictures are in the article. I somehow pictured Hal living someplace less contemporary! I'd love to get a glimpse inside of Burt's place, too.

Re: Dionne's Stage Show

Thanks B2B! You always have the scoop. Is it your guess, then, that the side of the Dionne Warwicke Story with her impersonations was recorded at the Copa in 1968? I've often wondered where/when each side was recorded. I'm able to make a pretty good guess at the years (1964, 1966, 1968, and 1970), b...

Re: Dionne's Stage Show

Thanks Bruce! Great story. Now, I really do think that my relative is confusing Dionne and Diana. It sounds like you got to see the version of Dionne's show that was captured on the live Dionne Warwicke Story album, where she did the impressions of Pearl Bailey, Diana Ross, and Marlene Dietrich. How...

Dionne's Stage Show

Bacharachians, I need your help! Has Dionne's stage show always been the relatively minimalist affair that has been documented over the years (simple set design, no fancy costumes and wardrobe changes, no dancers, no special effects, etc.)? A relative of mine claims to have seen Dionne in concert ba...

Re: "What's up" with Dionne

Speaking of David Elliott, he has some new recordings in the country-rock genre that sound fantastic. Here's an example: He definitely has the Drinkard/Warrick pipes, and he has always presented himself as a class act across the board.

Re: "What's up" with Dionne

My Friends and Me 2 is correct. I didn't have high hopes once I heard that Damon was at the helm, but I guess part of me thought there was still a chance that Dionne would knock it out of the park like she did with Now. Alas, this one is only a notch above My Friends and Me, which I still maintain i...

Re: Did Jewish Brill writers prefer Black singers?

Interesting question. I will eagerly await the response of those who lived during those times. However, I do have one theory, as least as it relates to Bacharach/David. For them, I think it was strictly about trying to capture a particular sound. They were going for a certain sophisticated soul soun...
