Henry Mancini (OT)

Post by Dennis Webb »

This is off-topic, but I'm sure there must be some Henry Mancini fans among our regulars here. I wanted to mention that the U.S. Postal Service has just issued a commemorative stamp for Mancini. It shows him with his arms extended, obviously conducting an orchestra. There is a list of song titles in the background. Just thought there might be some people like me who would want to get a few for keepsakes.

Has Mancini been gone for 10 years already? I think that's the waiting period before a commemorative stamp can be issued in the U.S. If I'm not mistaken, he has a daughter who has a singing career, or is trying to establish one. He wrote so many great film scores, and it's hard to believe that the same person wrote some of them, as they are so different. No matter how many scores he had written, he never seems to have lost the knack for being original. Hollywood could certainly use another Mancini.

I liked a lot of the music Hank composed.

Was he friends with Burt does anyone know?

I'm still trying to find out who Burt hanged with all those years! Who were his close friends?

Mancini's Pals

I don't think Henry hung with Burt...His pals at least in the 60's were Andy and Claudine(Longet)Williams, also Bobby and Ethyl Kennedy.

I am a big Mancini fan and from that time in the late 60s when BB music had started to touch me so deep, i was also knocked off by
Mancini. Though Henry's songs were not that many as Burt,
most of his compositions were hauntingly beautiful with that
touch of sadness, not unlike some of my fav. BB's works.

One song that hit me in particular was "Sunflower" (the title
song of the file with the same name starring Sophie Lauren),
which had the quality i said above.

His earlier top 10 hit in the pop chart "Love Theme from
Romeo and Juliet" (though not his composition) was one of
my fav. instrumentals of the 60s.
Of course his classics "Moon River" and "Charade" had been
standards and both had that melancholic European feel
(the accordians in the bridge of the songs)

From early 70s, I began to look for Mancini's compositions (which were not
that easy to find) and had found many great ones
like: Once is not Enough
Sometimes (sung by karen Carpenter)
Thornbirds .......

In recent years, when music could be searched as mp3 on the
Internet, i found some rare gems by Mancini like:
Crazy World
Auntie Lily (both sung by Johnny Mathis)
Two for the Road
