Re: Dionne Warwick and Rob Shrock playing at Blue Note 6/02/11

It's my understanding that several of the male duets were already in the can when Concord Records failed to pick up the second duets album due to lack of sales and poor critical reception of the first. Damon Elliott was responsible for the arrangements and production and it was done on a shoe string...

Re: Rumer

Bruce, I am familiar with Esther Satterfleld and although she does have some similarities to Dionne. I never mistook her for Dionne although I can understand why someone might. Her phrasing is what reminds me of Dionne the most. She's a very talented vocalist.

Re: Dionne Warwick and Rob Shrock playing at Blue Note 6/02/11

Alex, can you explain to me what the point is to keep debating what opinion is versus what is a fact? Yes, Dionne has a voice, just as Julie Andrews does. Is the voice the same as it was even 15 years ago? No, it's not. Is it a pleasing voice? That's a matter of personal opinion. To me, it's not oft...

Re: Rumer

Don't put words in my mouth Gill, I never said Dionne's voice was on the verge of collapse. I said it was a shadow of what it once was...I don't imply anything...I come out and state it clearly. That's my opinion...it's also my opinion that as great as Aretha and Whitney were, Dionne had them both b...

Re: Dionne Warwick and Rob Shrock playing at Blue Note 6/02/11

Well said Blair...I for one believe that if Dionne had quit singing after say 1975 and gone into teaching like she wanted to, she would be inducted into the RRHOF today...I love a few of the tunes she did for Arista but generally her Arista output was bland and far below the standard she, Burt and H...

Re: Dionne Warwick and Rob Shrock playing at Blue Note 6/02/11

The fact is that Warwick's voice has aged as she has. Her voice gets tired and it shows. She has good days and bad days. Her voice is not what it was. The proof is in the hearing. Yes she has a range...only Blair said she had "no range" which is an overstatement that he has every right to ...

Re: Rumer

Well, that may explain why Burt didn't work direclly with Karen Carpenter as well...she and Rumer sound a lot alike although I believe I prefer Rumer...I have always maintained that Karen had a beautiful tonality to her voice and such a smoky alto;it was clear also. But, Karen lacked range, and dyna...

Re: notes from the tour

I have to agree with Gill; not my facorite interpretation by a long shot. Lacks so much but interesting nonetheless.

Re: Dionne Warwick and Rob Shrock playing at Blue Note 6/02/11

She hasn't stopped smoking. Dionne "quit" several times between 2000 and 2008, the longest period was when she had dental and jaw surgery in 2000. She started her smoking habit back full blast in 2009 and is up to about 2 packs a day. She was seen frequently smoking on breaks during Celebr...

Re: Dionne Warwick and Rob Shrock playing at Blue Note 6/02/11

This may sound harsh but it's how I feel. Although Dionne did well on the Sammy Cahn album and it was her most compelling effort in years, her once great voice has not held up well at all when singing her old material. You are comparing Sarah Vaughn's voice to Dionne's. Sarah's last album was Brazil...

Dionne Warwick-Anyone Who Had A Heart-Rare Stage Clip 1964

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=40JIwp4l9U8 Here is an extremely rare live clip of Dionne Warwick at a 1964 appearance, probably at a club in the New York area, singing Anyone Who Had A Heat. Dionne looks very lovely here in a deep-dish white gown...the video is wide screen and is a little distorted ...

Re: BB and Karen Carpenter

The question is, why DIDN'T they record more Bacharach covers than they did? It seems as though Burt wasn't interested in working with Karen directly but it also seems as though they weren't that interested in recording more Bacharach after that initial burst of Bacharach covers...Karen was a huge f...

Love Marian Mercer. May she RIP. She was such a versatile actor and was a fixture on television and movies in the 1960s and 1970s. A truly gifted actor!

Re: Last week's Sounds of the 60s played Warwick's rarity

Funny, he called the tune "Window Shopping" and I've never heard any commentary other than here about Warwick's alleged frustration at Bacharach's more complex composing! It doesn't get much more complex than Anyone Who Had A Heart written a full year and a half before Window Wishing...I a...

Re: BB and Karen Carpenter

George, Agree that Karen certainly had the chops but would Richard have allowed Bacharach the freedom to explore Karen with no constraints as he had with Dionne? Since both Richard Carpenter and Herb Alpert were somewhat controlling of Karen according to "Little Girl Lost", an excellent bi...
