Dusty bio-pic in the works

That biopic sounds amazing. Rest assured that plenty of BB tunes will be featured. Interesting that Kristen Chenoweth will be portraying a lesbian-- no way this subplot can be skirted in this day and age-- while in real life she tours with right-wing Christian music and sermon revival shows... where...

How Burt varies his sonorities...

I was re-watching the Bacharach/Costello SESSIONS AT WEST 54TH video today... Though I've watched it numerous times, there's something I really noticed today: the way Burt is using more synthesizer today than he's ever done in the past. I notice that he would have his synth player play a solo pad of...

WTWNN(IL)

Wow... Can you imagine how the 1960's would have unfolded had Gene Pitney launched "What The World Needs Now (Is Love)" ? I love Pitney, don't get me wrong... but the Jackie de Shannon is pure magic... there is a pathos in that record that is almost unbearable. It hasn't aged an iota. By t...

Happy Birthday, Burt

Happy Birthday, Burt. You're pop music's greatest living legend, and you are a national treasure. A musical mind such as yours comes along only once every two or three centuries.

Like Giuseppe Verdi, you will be writing your masterworks in your 80's, I am sure of it...

Best,

DAVE

re: B.J. Thomas gems

Yes, when I first discovered that song-- only two or three years ago!-- I couldn't stop playing the record, singing it, and trying to plunk out the melody on the piano... BB has always lavished so much intelligence and finesse to every parameter of his pop songs... but "Long Ago Tomorrow" ...

B.J. Thomas recs

Yes, "Everybody's Out Of Town" and "Scranton, PA" are two super-gems of the BB/HD style.

Fave British male cover

Maybe a surprise here: Frank Ifield's version of "Anonymous Phone Call" is just a perfect recording of a BB song. He sings the song perfectly, with the right tone, pitch and rhythm. "After The Fox" is such a brilliant record. It's got that icy, compressed "pop art" feel...

re: "My Thief"

Yes, it's a brilliant song. Like all of Burt's songs, it's got so many refreshing surprises. What I like most about "My Thief" is the way the melody employs lots of dazzling non-chord tones. (Emphasizing on masculine beats notes which do not belong to the tetrad of the moment, but rather a...

New release for Burt?

On the recent Marian McPartland PIANO JAZZ special, Burt did, in fact, intimate to Marion that he was creating a new album of (drumroll, please!) all originals! 8) He didn't specify when it was to be released, though. Usually nice products like this get released around the end of October... in time ...

Tricky quiz... for Burt experts only!

OK, here's a "Name That Tune" quiz... for true Burt fans only. Below are brief quotations of lyrics from various Burt songs over his long career so far... (The lyricists include several that he's worked with over the years.) Good luck! 1. "...no doubts, no fears..." 2. &qu...

re: Whitney's plight

I don't know what the drug-of-choice has been for Whitney and Bobby, but I suspect it's cocaine. Hopefully not crack/ice. I do know that, if you get famous enough, or if you are attractive enough, or socially popular enough, you can get into circles where the coke flows freely... What I'm saying is,...

re: Ultra-Lounge liner notes

That's a sweet little review, Westgate. Bell-bottoms and granny glasses... hmmm, that places that concert at about 1968 or -9 ? I'm glad Dionne's own look never got into the hippy-dippy-trippy. I'm not sure she'd have looked so swell with a Roberta Flack "natural". She has always tur...
