Re: Amazing
Agreed. I've had this thought before. Promises Promises on it's own is such a treasure trove. One song you neglected to mention is "Who Is Gonna Love Me" - which I think is an under-appreciated classic. Fantastic chord changes / Phenomenal Dionne vocal / so elegant ! You're right... I not...

Amazing
I've thought about it this weekend listening the Rhino CD Promises promises/I'll never fall in love again. Maybe I'm being too obvious or pointless, but these two recordings include this number of amazing songs (among others): Promises, promises Whoever you are, I love you Dream sweet dreamer Odds a...

Re: Burt's unique use of background vocals
Hi everybody! Mmh, I wish there was a reissue of the Make it easyon yourself album. Don't you think that Burt's characteristic 'girl background vocals' (typical example: Burt's solo version of 'Don't go breaking my heart') are similar to those used by Antonio Carlos Jobim and other brasilian musicia...

Re: Make way for Dionne Warwick
By the way, the Dionne (Scepter) covers are a bit dull, don't you think? (expect "Make way for..." and "Very Dionne", which I like). It's as if Scepter didn't care (or didn't have the budget, look at the "Promises promises" cover). Do you think this is a dull cover? ht...

Re: Make way for Dionne Warwick
Thank you very much, if I go there (or if anybody I know does), I will check it. Yes, I see more and more vinyl in record shops which is nice. In Madrid there are two big places to buy records: a big store called EL Corte Inglés (v. similar to Macys), where you can find surprisingly interesting thin...

Re: Make way for Dionne Warwick
When I was in New York last year I managed to buy in the (I think) Virgin Megastore of Union Square (it was about to close) and found some interesting Motown and other stuff. Then I was recommended a 2nd hand CD shop in Bleecker Street (Bleecker Records) that was dissapointing. Maybe I didn't know w...

Re: Make way for Dionne Warwick
Hi MexicanDivorce Yes, the Make way for Dionne cover is like a Supremes photo only that with three Dionnes instead of 1 Diana/1 Mary/1 Flo. But the resemblance stop here, because the Sups were singing poppy-teenager songs at that time (signed by the fantastic team Holland/Dozier/Holland), while Dion...

Re: What if BURT were british
british pop, or at least what is known in the world as Bristish pop, is a very re-interpretation of American music, call it R&B, rock and roll, Motown, etc. and Bacharach was there before British pop revolutionized the world (which is around 1964-65). Bacharach's tradition is that of the america...

Re: Jimmy Webb
You're lucky, I'd love to see a Jimmy Webb concert. Last summer I had the chance to meet Burt Bacharach after his concert in Madrid, he signed my copies of 'At this time' and 'Live at the Sidney Opera'. He was very nice and had a lot of patience signing records, shaking hands and posing for photos w...

Re: Jimmy Webb
Sorry to go off on a tangent again but my intentions are honorable, the link between Jimmy and Burt goes without being said and the music is fantastic... I never really got into Jimmy although I always loved MacArthur Park, Gentle on My Mind etc... Long story short, I downloaded the Thelma Houston ...

Re: Scott Walker - ideal male Burt Bacharach singer?
Absolutely. The incredible thing is that Scott Walker's first three solo records (Scott 1, 2 and 3) were very successful, charting respectively at numbers 3, 1 and 3 in the UK (Scott 4 did not chart and sent Scott Walker to a dark period, being forgotten until he reunited the Walker Brothers again i...

"In between the heartaches you hold me here in your arms and say you love me. In between the heartaches the way you kiss I can tell you're thinking of me. I know you love me. And that makes up for all the heartaches and the sadness and the tears. They don't ever see us In between the heartaches...

Re: Scott Walker - ideal male Burt Bacharach singer?
I think BJ Thomas and Scott Walker sing at different levels. BJ is more relaxed and ironic, while Scott W. is more melodramatic (to be honest, I don't imagine him doing Everybody's out of town).

Re: Scott Walker - ideal male Burt Bacharach singer?
A great interpreter of other's words & music, although I'm not sure Scott Walker really enjoyed being prodded into "commercial" areas of popular music by his record company. I really enjoy his versions of some of Jimmy Webb's material: an absolutely beautiful version of "When Doe...
