Sandie Shaw - Girl Don't Come

Post by gillanddon »

Does anyone know if this great Sandie Shaw number, 'Girl Don't Come', is a Burt Bacharach song? It sounds so much like his. I think it is one of her best songs from the 60's .. so cool sounding.

I found it on YouTube and listened. Really cool song and VERY like Burt's stuff. I never heard of it before and have never seen it mentioned in a review of Burt's catalog, but it's obvious the author - if not, indeed Burt himself - was imitating him. The trombone parts are very reminiscent of "Always Something There to Remind Me." Thanks for giving the heads-up!

First heard "Girl Don't Come" as done by Cher on her debut solo 1965 album, "All I Really Want to Do". It was written by British songwriter Chris Andrews who has written many songs recorded by Sandie Shaw and Adam Faith. Mr. Andrews has also had some songs on the British chart under his own name. I believe he is stll living and performing. Incidentally, that debut solo album by Cher also included songs from Ray Davies (The Kinks), Jackie DeShannon , Pete Seeger and three Bob Dylan songs. I assume Cher recorded "Girl Don't Come" due to it being a hit in England for Sandie Shaw around that same time.

Thank you for the feedback steve and groovefinder ... I remember the name Chris Andrews and I think he also wrote 'Message Understood' for Sandie Shaw as well? Perhaps more? I have to admit he really inhabited the Bacharach sound of the mid 6o's era on 'Girl Don't Come'. Those brass introductions are Burt's calling cards!! Perhaps, as you say, Chris Andrews thought if the Bacharach sound worked for Sandie Shaw on 'Always Something There To Remind Me' it could work again on 'Girl Don't Come' so he mimicked it.
