Morricone is such a musical genius! He's scored 500 films and with such high quality compositions. He would have to have scored 10 films a year for 50 years to equal 500 films! Imagine that! Even scoring one film a year for 50 years is amazing!blueonblue wrote:Another 86 yr old, who's still composing and performing concert's.

By comparison, the great John Williams, age 83, scored 99 films.

This is a revelation to me because I`d always assumed Lady Gaga to be merely the latest incarnation of Madonna, J-Lo, Britney et. al. and never paid any attention.
Having said that. I can`t say that my taste runs to show tune vocals all the time, but I`ll surely now check out her collaboration with Tony Bennett, a project that simply dumbfounded me on sight.

Eydie Gorme, "What Am I Doing Here":
Are there other versions of this?? Is this an early or late B/D composition??

This was a "rejected" song from "Promises, Promises" (1968)grooverider wrote:Eydie Gorme, "What Am I Doing Here":

The only other version I know of was recorded by Liz Callaway sometime in the early nineties.

With her striking Marilyn Monroe type looks allied to a strong and distinctive voice, Kathy Kirby was a big star in the UK in the 60s and with four Top 20 hits. One of her last singles of that decade was her version of what must be Bacharach and David's most covered non-hit. There hasn't been too many outstanding recordings of this song but I think this is one of the better ones, especially the arrangement:

From her latest cd, "It's The Girls", here's Bette Midler, "Baby It's You":

Although perhaps not out of Bacharach and David's top drawer, it was still very refreshing to hear this once again on BBC Radio 2's Sounds of the 60s last Saturday morning:

In today's (May 5, 2015) New York Times, there is a review of singer Roslyn Kind's act at the club "54 Below" (on 54th street between Broadway and 8th Avenue). It isn't the greatest review of Roslyn Kind (who happens to be Barbra Streisand's half-sister). But it's the last sentence of the review that caught my eye: "The happiest discovery was an obscure Burt Bacharach-Hal David love song, "I Just Have To Breathe," which Ms. Kind carried off without a hitch."
Of course, all of us here know what a great song that is and it's not a "happy discovery" for any of us here either, as we've known about this song for a long time. I'm glad that the New York Times reviewer finally discovered what a great song it is. It won't become a hit for Roslyn Kind, but maybe another singer will hear it and make a hit out of it in the same way that Roberta Flack heard Lori Lieberman singing "Killing Me Softly" and then
made a hit out of that brilliant song for herself.

Not released on any album until it's inclusion as one of the bonus tracks on the "The First Time Ever (I saw Your Face)" expanded reissue cd, here's Vikki Carr, "Reflections" (from "Lost Horizon") from 1972:
