Although this is one of the key songs from Promises, Promises, it has rarely been covered and I'm fairly confident that this is the only recording of it by a woman:

I've always found it inexplicable that this beautiful film title song written by Bacharach and David for Doris Day wasn't a huge hit:

A lounge-jazz version of 'Here I Am' by Gary Macfarland. Well, it's such a contrast to the Dionne Warwick version......

I always liked SMNF, too. Yet, the mid-sixties weren`t the ideal era for another Doris Day hit - if you know what I mean. I don`t know if this was even released as a single. I certainly can`t remember it receiving any airplay.
Just another of too many that went under-heard.

I read that the original version of "Send Me No Flowers" was arranged by Jack Nitszche (Phil Spector's arranger on many songs) but that Martin Melcher (Ms. Day's husband) disliked it and Mort Garson was brought in and that's the version that was released. Burt Bacharach's note to Mr. Nitszche was to have her sound like a "white Ronettes". I wonder if that original version is available, would really like to hear it?

Yes it was released as a single in late 1964, reaching the dizzying heights of no.134 in the US Hot 100, sorry 200. The other inexplicable thing about the song is that in 51 years no one else has got round to recording it.

Here's her recording of a virtually unknown Cole Porter song. Now just listen to those lyrics!

Just great. Cole Porter, Larry Hart et. al. were in a league of their own. Hal (bless him) didn`t come close. But it was his job (as I`ve pointed out before) to write words to songs for teen-agers. Yes, he rose above that call on a number of occasions but he won`t be recalled as the equal of the afore-noted.
As I`ve also noted before, in the 60s/70s pop music lyrics sacrificed universality for auto-biographical specificity. So, Paul Simon and Joni Mitchell (among others) were clearly the equal of their predecessors but never going to have "covers" of their songs as was previously routine.
It was a new sub-genre; one that has now become dominant and not for the better in my view.

Sorry, but I can`t hear a hint of Bacharach in this. It sounds like a track that should have been on one of those compilations of songs from the late `50s or very early `60s.

Blair couldnt disagree with you more bout Hal. Its only now i am really realizing how essential Hal was to the Bacharach collabo. Bacharachs melodies were so complex and unpredictable and assuming David was a songwriter and not just a poet, his lyrics always transitioned so seamlessly with Burt's meter and tempo changes. Now Laura Nyro on the other hand.......

I loved Laura Nyro`s albums through Christmas and the Beads of Sweat.
But she was writing herself, as were the other "singer/songwriters" of the time. Comparing her to Bacharach/David or Jimmy Webb is a categorical error.
Her "come-back" period produced disappointing lyrics that sounded like eco-feminist greeting cards, but displayed a wonderfully new sense of melody and a voice shorn of what the uncharitable might have previously called "stridency".

God bless the.technology age I grew up in cuz now u dont have.to limit urself to radio n tv. I discovered laura in 201 qnd fell in luv instantly. My parents had only a passing familiarity with the name tho of course they know the.big hits others covered notably fifth dimension n barbara.streisand. I think its a crime she.wasnt used as a hitmaker while working at the.brill building. Her eccentric interpretation of her work might hqve.scared ppl away. She wrote for grown, ups, who, need to,hqve.mature consciousness. however her meldoies were alwqys beautiful. Songs like hes.a.runner I never meant.to hrt you, you dont love me when I cry. Midnite blue, emmie, upstairs,by chinese lamp, brown earth, luckie,lu,timer, captqin st lucifer are some of the.best songs ive heard in life. Imagine if she had wrote as,many somgs for other artists?

I know, people lqud joni mitchell pqul simon and nwil young but the prob is my ears were spoiled to beautiful melodies early in life and they often, miss that bar. I listen to qlot of jonis work qnd love help me but too kuch of the other songs sound too atonal clfolk for me sqme with the others.

Scott walker cover of any day now. It has, almost a carpenters style arrangement. The instrumentation is actually more bacharacian than the original.
