Errand of Mercy
What a voice...ahem. Boy, they'd give a recording track to any pretty face back then...not terribly different from today!
Although 'Don't Envy Me' sounds like one of Bacharach's more pedestrian early-1960's efforts and I prefer Pitney's spare, emotive rendition of 'Little Betty Falling Star', 'Errand of Mercy' has one of his Bacharach's trademark 1964-era melodies and arrangements that even Hamilton's talent can't undermine. (It has a lot of drama, that staggered, loping rhythm they used with so many male vocalists and I love those string fills at the fade.) I can easily imagine Gene Pitney or Lou Johnson making this another minor classic. I bet it's gorgeous in stereo, even with Hamilton's vocal.
Thanks again!
