Post by fendertweed »

We have some tix for a show later this year and wonder: what is he playing and in what format(s), i.e., singing solo w/ piano; sung by others; played w/ arrangements (band/orchestral), etc.?

Thanks!

Hi fendertweed,

I attended the concert on March 8 in Tacoma WA. In this program Burt Bacharach performed with his musicians (no orchestra). Burt played the piano and conducted the music. The three back up singers sang the medleys and Burt sang later in the program (I indicated where) while playing the piano. This was the order of the program that night:

What the World Needs Now Is Love

Medley:
Don’t Make Me Over
Walk On By
This Guy’s In Love With You
I Say A Little Prayer
Trains & Boats & Planes
Wishin’ & Hopin’
Always Something There To Remind Me

Medley:
One Less Bell To Answer
I’ll Never Fall In Love Again
Only Love Can Break A Heart
Do You Know the Way To San Jose

Solo by Josie James: Anyone Who Had A Heart
Solo by Donna Taylor: Are You Falling Out Of Love
(written with Jerry Leiber, sung by Aretha Franklin)
Solo by John Pagano: God Give Me Strength
(written with Elvis Costello)

First four hit songs:
Magic Moments
“The way you smile at meâ€￾ (I don’t know the title)
The Blob (written for the movie “The Blobâ€￾ starring Steve McQueen in his first role)
Tower Of Strength

From the new CD “At This Timeâ€￾:
Go Ask Shakespeare
Who Are These People?

Movie Medley:
The Look of Love (sung by Burt)
Arthur’s Theme
What’s New Pussycat
April Fools
Raindrops Keep Fallin’ On My Head (sung by Burt)
Liberty Valance
I Remember You & Makin’ Love (I don’t know the exact title)
Wives & Lovers (sung by Burt)
Alfie (sung by Burt)
A House Is Not A Home (sung by Burt)

Then Burt introduced Hal David in the audience. Hal David came on stage and talked about writing songs for “Promises, Promisesâ€￾ and sang “I’ll Never Fall In Love Againâ€￾.

Closing:
That’s What Friends Are For

Encore:
Solo by John Pagano: Any Day Now
What the World Needs Now Is Love

Second encore:
Raindrops Keep Fallin’ On My Head (audience sing along)

When Burt Bacharach performs with only his musicians, he does a longer show and talks more in between songs. When he performs with an orchestra, the program is shorter because of the orchestra union and time limit. I have attended several performances in various cities and enjoy both formats. When Burt released "At This Time", he dropped his first four hits from the program and added four songs from the new CD. In this performance, he did the first four hits and two songs from the CD. I was thrilled to shake hands with Hal David after the program! Hope this information is what you were looking for.

Which performance are you going to this year?

Laura,

Thanks! We have tickets for Strathmore (Bethesda MD) in June. It's a 7:00 show and no mention of an orchestra... sounds like a great night. Thanks again for the info, very helpful. I'm a huge fan of "Painted From Memory" so nice to see at least one song from that, I could listen to him do the whole album.

Hi Jon,

I will be at the Bethesda performance as well - in the first row in front of the singers!

I also have tickets for Las Vegas (5th row) in May, Princeton in June, and San Diego in July. San Diego is an outdoor concert at the Embarcadero Marina with the San Diego Symphony. The orchestra is on a stage. The audience sits at round tables of 4 seats in front of the stage (the "Champagne Section"), or bleacher seats in the back, or on the ground on the sides, while watching the sail boats go by and the sunset over the ocean. They also do 5 minutes of fireworks after the show. It's a wonderful venue. So I'll try to report back after those shows too.

Hope you enjoy the show!
