The Balance of Nature has never been a particular favourite of mine but I like Rumer's version, especially the vocal harmonies and the fact it's slightly less ponderous than the previous recordings of the song. The decision to repeat the bridge was a masterstroke too.

A lot of the credit must surely go to Rob Shirakbari, his arrangement and production are perfect and very faithful to Burt's original for Dionne in 1972.

Thanks Nicko. I'm glad they've kept all the original arrangement hooks for Walk On By as they're such an integral part of the song. If the remaining nine tracks are up to the standard of the three already out in the public domain then this will be a pretty special album.

Bacharach quoted re Rumer's imminent album of his and Hal David's songs:

"When you are gifted by an artist doing an album of your music you accept that as a compliment but then you get to hear it and it's so damn good. The lady has a golden voice and the vocals are clean and clear with great sincerity and Hal David's lyrics shine through. There are some songs I'd almost forgotten about and Rumer has given them new life. I thank you for this gift Rumer, it's special."

The release date for this album has now been pushed back five weeks to November 25th. It's those men in suits again obviously thinking about the Christmas market but in the meantime no doubt pissing off her fans and, judging by her reaction to the news, Rumer herself.

How very tiresome and yet at the same time unsurprising knowing how calculating record company executives are. Far from maximising its commercial potential, in my opinion by putting the release back the album has now more chance of getting lost in the Christmas rush.

I wonder if Rumer at any time considered recording this gem for her Bacharach & David album? This song is one of the loveliest they ever wrote and yet it remains virtually unknown to the general public. That it would have suited Rumer's intimate vocal style goes without saying.
