I'd been familiar with Christopher Cross's hit version of 'Arthur's Theme' for weeks in 1981 before I found out to my surprise that Bacharach had a composing credit for the song. I suppose the sterile 80's production and arrangement helped to disguise Bacharach's involvement and it's a shame that until recently every cover I've heard of the song since has used Cross's version as a template. That is until I heard English singer Georgie Smit's recording on the 'Simply the Songs of Burt Bacharach' 4 CD box-set. Yes, it sounds a bit synthetic in places but all the people I've played this to have agreed with me that this version makes it sound much more like a Bacharach song and using a flugal horn instead of the alto sax in the instrumental break is a big factor in this:

It gives me chills every time I hear that signature ending much in the way he ended this medley at the Roundhouse. What a touching moment. As Marvin Hamlisch stated in the clip, notice his sense of detail as he even conducts the triangle player then reaches over to the piano and adds that final trill. He has an uncanny sense of timing.

Video once removed from YouTube of Burt, Karima and Mario Biondi at the San Remo festival.

I think this video is soooooooo wonderful. It blows my mind every time. I wrote somewhere that to me this is artistry meeting entertainment at the highest possible level.

BTW: I like Biondi's interpretations of Burt's songs a lot.
