I attended the dress rehearsal to PP in 1997 (was it not 1996?) and the City Center president said that they wanted to do a revival and asked permission to Burt and Hal. She reported that they said yes, but with one condition: that a new song was added to the show. She said something to the effect that the request only made things better, and those attending applauded as they became aware of the opportunity to be the first to listen to that song and see it performed on stage.
I recall that Bernadete Peters attended that rehearsal and that behind me there was a professor from Columbia University (a student approached him during intermission, I guess). The professor said to whoever was next to him that the addtion was a big mistake, as if it hadn't worked. I, on the other hand, just loved it. I love the duet, and on stage it was also fantastic. What a powerful number!
