Around about the time BB started recording albums under his own name in the mid-60s, Tony Hatch, "Britain's Burt Bacharach", started doing the same, the main difference being that his albums were purely instrumental without a vocal or even a backing vocal to be heard and were a vehicle for his skills as an orchestrator. He also occasionally took liberties with some of his hit songs' chord sequences, something that Bacharach rarely if ever did on his own albums from that time. Apart from the inevitable hits ('Downtown', 'Call Me', 'Where Are You Now', etc, etc) there were also a number of the British TV themes that Hatch was equally well known for in the UK and which have remaimed popular to this day. Here's his very catchy theme to 'Man Alive from 1965:

Martin, I used to love 'Man Alive' and especially Tony Hatch's theme. Another great piece by Hatch written for TV was his theme for 'Sportsnight'. It brings back memories of Wednesday nights in the 60s and 70s and watching the show with my Dad.

Hearing Dee Dee Warwick's 'Lover's Chant' on BBC Radio's Sounds of the 60s this morning got me thinking about her recording of 'Alfie'. Hearing it again now I'm impressed by what a mature, full bodied interpretation it is, although I could have done without the key change before the final verse. Below is the only video of the record on Youtube which the poster in his or her infinite wisdom decided to bring to an abrupt halt about 10 seconds too early.

Yes, blue, what a masterful performance by Johnny Mathis -- one of the greatest pop singers ever. And singing a song by the truly great songwriter Michel Legrand. A great combination for sure. And you're right about how long he can hold a note. (While he was holding that note, I had lunch and came back!!)

Three "lesser known" Bacharach & David songs were featured on this morning's 'Sounds of the 60s' Three in a Row slot. I suppose out of the three Françoise Hardy's French language version of 'The Love of a Boy' is the least known and the link is below. The other two tracks were Michele Lee's 'Knowing When to Leave' and Ben E. King's 'They Don't Give Medals to Yesterday's Heroes'
