I found it interesting (and I'm happy about it) that they put Burt and Hal together and didn't just put Burt's name alone. Of course, they should be #1, but that's a given.

If any more proof was needed that we're living in the age of philistinism then this ludicrous poll supplies it. I wonder how truly great songwriters like Cole Porter and Irving Berlin would have fared in this list if they were still alive - languishing about 30 places behind the likes of Bono, Sting and the guitarist from the Smiths no doubt. I remember in 1999 an English publication carried out a similar poll amongst British journalists for the all time greatest popular composers of the 20th century and Bacharach was in the top 10, about 7th or 8th as I recall, which has to be a more accurate reflection of the enormous contribution he's made over the last 50 years.
