BACHARACH’S BACK
The list of composers who can say they’ve worked with The Beatles, The Carpenters, Petula Clark, Elvis Costello, Marlene Dietrich, Aretha Franklin, Tom Jones, Gene Pitney, Dusty Springfield Rufus Wainwright, and Dionne Warwick is exceedingly small. In fact, only one man is on it: Burt Bacharach. So to say that Bacharach’s upcoming performances with the Sydney Symphony are a coup for the orchestra verges on understatement. The author of more than 500 songs, winner of three Academy Awards and seven Grammys will be in Sydney for three performances with the Symphony in February; his first shows in Australia since 1998, and the first since the early ’70s with a full orchestra.
