What do you think Burt's best soundtrack is?

Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid and, since you mentioned it, Promises, Promises.
If you consider Burt's arrangements for the relevant songs included in the Make It Easy on Youself album, then Promises, Promises wins, in my judgment. Gotta love South American Getaway and Come Touch the Sun (and the others) though.

Mark;

The last Minute of Burt's version from the, 'Living Together' CD. "Lost Horizon" is truly Awesome!!!

I know it's not a sound track per say, but where does Burt come up with these beautiful endings!!!

My favourite is Casino Royale. I love every track of this very rich soundtrack.

And I think that Michael McDonald "I've got my mind made up" (from "Together?") was a terrific tune. One of the most beautiful songs that Burt wrote for a movie.

I agree re I've Got My Mind Made Up.
I also agree with Vincent about the incredible endings of Burt's songs. That's one of the things that have always boggled my mind about his works.

:lol:

My favorite has to be Butch Cassidy, but really - it's not like I am going to a island all alone and am allowed to bring only one soundtrack. I like them all so I have them all.

Promises Promises is not only the best of the selections presented, it may also be among the 3 best musicals written in the 60's. However, writing a Broadway musical and scoring a movie are two different disciplines.

My pick for best Bacharach movie score would be "After the Fox", but it's a rather tepid vote. (Apologies to "Butch Cassidy" fans.) Although I have enormous respect for his musical talents as a writer/arranger/producer of popular songs, Burt's movie scores have never struck me as being extraordinary.

what would the other two 60's top musicals be, ron?

For me, "Make It Easy on Yourself" is the best album, both because of the inventive way in which Burt arranged the "Promises" songs on it, especially the title tune, and because of the overall quality of every track. I love his orchestration of "Make It Easy on Yourself." Another favorite of mine is the "Woman" album. How do you characterize those magnificent, symphonic treats!!

Sorry about that. I was thinking "best album," not best soundtrack. For best soundtrack, it's a toss up between "Casino Royale" and "Butch Cassidy." On the Casino album, my favorite track is "The Venerable Sir James Bond;" on the Butch Cassidy album, it's "The Sundance Kid."

Love your posts, Steve, but I would like to know your preference re best soundtrack (including PP, also listed by Mark). I feel that your post shows we may feel/think somewhat alike (see mine).
