RADIO ONE Founder/Chairperson CATHY HUGHES has fired back at supporters of the radio performance royalty bill with both barrels in the AUG. 4th issue of the weekly N'DIGO. The HUFFINGTON POST reports HUGHES being quoted as saying that DIONNE WARWICK is more a paid lobbyist for the record industry than she is a relevant artist.

She's responding to WARWICK's assertion that RADIO ONE and radio has to stop "ripping off black artists" and pay up. (According to the story, RADIO ONE stations may have to pay over about $14 million a year in royalties -- and that the bill's passage could cause the demos of a bevy of minority-owned radio stations.)

They're saying, 'Oh, I'm an artist,' and that is true, but you're also getting a paycheck from the record companies. I'm not mad because this girl doesn't have any other way to make this type of money, other than doing this. So I understand what's causin
"You wouldn't even know DIONNE WARWICK existed if we did not play her," HUGHES said. "DIONNE hasn't had a record in 30 years. You wouldn't even know she was alive. She's raising so much hell, talking about me like a dog -- I've paid her rent. I've helped her out, she's been in trouble several times."

HUGHES then tempers her fire at WARWICK and aims at a bigger party. "But let me say this, I ain't mad at her, and the reason why is because the record industry, SOUNDEXCHANGE and MUSICFIRST -- according to a source at THE WHITE HOUSE -- they have already spent about $28 million to get this legislation passed. DIONNE and them are on the payroll. They are getting like, $200,000-$300,000 paychecks, flying on corporate jets, being put up in suites at the hotel. They are getting paid, they are professional lobbyists on this issue.
"They're saying, 'Oh, I'm an artist,' and that is true, but you're also getting a paycheck from the record companies to come out here and say this s**t. Sounds as though sleazy Cathy Hughes is already losing a lot of money...Hughes goes after everyone who dare support singers rights and she has Warwick squarely in her sights...Hughes is irrelevent...never heard of her until she starting attacking Dionne Warwick...without artists like Warwick, Hughes wouldn't have her network and she's been shafting them long enough, along with the rest of the radio industry. And, why is it that no one ever says Aretha or Barbara haven't had a hit record in years...they don't have to have hit records any longer to be relevent nor does DIonne. They are all legends...more than I can say for Hughes. Any wonder Hughes is lashing out at Warwick????? Read how much she has lost in the past two years below!

Lanham-based Radio One Inc., which canceled plans last month to relocate its headquarters to a new development in D.C.'s Shaw neighborhood, reports lower revenue and losses that more than doubled.

The company had a fiscal fourth quarter loss of $14.9 million, or 28 cents per share, compared to a net loss of $6.3 million, or 7 cents per share in the same quarter a year earlier.

Revenue fell 8.9 percent, from $73.9 million to $67.3 million.

The results were better, when compared to the previous quarter.

"Looking ahead to the first quarter, we are currently pacing up mid-single digits, with the recovery most apparent in our larger markets, where national business is performing strongly," said Chief Executive Alfred Liggins.

While Radio One said its decision not to relocate to Shaw was largely based on timing — its Lanham lease expires next year, and construction of the Shaw development has not yet begun - it did say the current economy also influenced its decision.

Radio One is still looking for a new location for its headquarters and has said it will consider the District and other local jurisdictions.

Radio One (NASDAQ: ROIA) owns 53 radio stations in 16 cities that primarily target African-American and urban audiences.

It’s the first law of radio: every time Shadio One loses money, CEO Alfred Liggins and his mama get a raise. So how much will Cathy Hughes’ radio conglomerate pay Alfred for this:

RADIO ONE has reported its results for the quarter ended JUNE 30th, 2009. Net revenue was approximately $70.1 million, a decrease of 16% from the same period in 2008. Station operating income was approximately $29.6 million, a decrease of 16% from the same period in 2008.

I’m thinking $5 million bonus… Maybe the country’s musical artists could get together and donate to the cause, out of the big royalties they earn from radio playing their … oh, riiiiiight … I almost forgot
