From this ** http://www.philstar.com/philstar/News200501161701.htm ** interview with Diane Warren (though the relevant part seems to be on the net in several places, such as http://www.yehey.com/promos/dianewarren/about.asp):

Would you remember the first song that you’ve ever heard or sung along with?

"I don’t remember the title but it was an Elvis Presley song I heard from my sister. I grew up on Top 40 radio; it was what I was exposed to and what attracted me. I loved listening to my older sister’s collection of records, people like Buddy Holly and many others. But believe it or not, I was more fascinated by the songwriters – Carole King, Leiber and Stroller, Burt Bacharach. Those were my idols."

Diane Warren has expressed on several occasions that her true idols were songwriters rather than singers or bands, Burt and Hal, also Carole King / Gerry Goffin. She also mentioned she felt honoured when Dusty Springfield recorded some of her songs (one appeared on "Reputation+rarities" , the others in her last album "Very fine Love").
