Although I can`t recall ever making eye contact, as I mentioned a while back, I observed Hal striding across Central Park South often when I was there employed and he was (I believe) president of ASCAP. I can`t say that his early, melodramatic lyrics really do much for me and Burt has said that he was only looking for certain consonantal requirements for his melodies. (They were, after all, writing songs in the Brill Building for teenagers).
But Hal justified his entire career with the words to Alfie( a song that, paradoxically ,I never cared for melodically).
Belated Happy Birthday, Hal! We unwittingly shared many a fine "Manhattan morning":(L. Nyro).
