There I was last night at the theatre version of The Exorcist, currently playing in London's West End, Phoenix theatre. Not surprisingly there's no sound track, just loads of creepy noises throughout.

Then suddenly, early in the second half, wholly inexplicably, came about 15 seconds of Wives and Lovers! Absolutely no reason for this I can think of. Apart from a brief burst of Tubular Bells at the end, this was the only music played all night. Weird (just like the play).

Anyone else seen the play ... or heard Burt somewhere unexpectedly?

Who's recording of 'Wives and Lovers' did they use? I don't recall ever hearing any Bacharach in a non-musical theatre production but his music can often be featured or heard in the background on TV shows, especially, bizarrely enough, gardening programs and a few years ago the producer of BBC's Gardeners World seemed to have a thing for the soundtrack of 'Butch Cassidy'. Out on the streets I've heard a busker outside Hampstead Tube Station performing 'What The World Needs Now' and three or four schoolgirls on Putney High Street giving a seemingly impromptu but word perfect rendition of 'Message To Michael'. It's funny how moments like that can make your day and stay with you.

I just want to know what purpose on earth "Wives and Lovers" could have served being placed anywhere in The Exorcist.
