LOST HORIZON - THE MUSICAL on Broadway

Post by rmorrisscott »

What do you think of the idea? I wonder what Mr. Bacharach would think?
LOST HORIZON - THE MUSICAL on Broadway.
I personally believe that this is past due and would be a huge success.
I sure would like to help with this project! Just looking for anyone's input.
Thanks!

It is my personal belief that Burt would be appalled at the idea. You may not know the grief that Burt went through with that movie. I can't believe that he'd want to have anything to do with Lost Horizon ever again.

Of course, I'd love to see it turned into a Broadway musical. The songs Burt and Hal wrote were just great!

Enmormous,
I agree with you that Burt would probably not want anything to do with "Lost Horizon"....in any form.
But this brings up an interesting question..since Columbia Pictures owns, or did own the copyrights to the music.(I wonder owns it now?-musical copyrights change ownership
today like people change underwear!)
I wonder if the songs and music could be used without Burt
and Hal's permission to do a broadway play with it?
MAybe someone with publishing legalese could answer...

Regarding a musical- not a good idea. That being said, I never would've imagined a musical based on a campy 60's tv show- "The Addams Family". It's currently playing in Chicago.
"Charlie Brown" was also made into a live-action musical.
"Spider-Man" is being considered as a musical.
"Shrek" was made into a musical.
"Lost Horizon"- don't know, but stranger things have happened.

steveo_1965: Good question and one that I can't answer. But at that stage in Burt's and Hal's careers, would they have signed over the publishing rights to those songs to Columbia versus Blue Seas, Jac. I don't think so. So my amateurish guess is that, if a stage production of "Lost Horizon" were mounted, and, if that show included the Bacharach/David songs, then Burt and Hal's permission would be needed.

burchifan: Yep! Stranger things HAVE happened.

There was talk (a while back) of someone turning "Promises, Promises" into a movie -- which is odd, since "Promises, Promises" was, itself, based on a movie: "The Apartment", starring Jack Lemmon and Shirley MacLaine.

Yes,
Promises, Promises being turned into a movie would be strange, as it had its genesis from "The Apartment" movie.
But...since the play has been fleshed out with all the dialogue and songs...I can see how it would be easier to adapt into a stylized film...
thing is, although I like this type of stuff, I'm not sure it would go over today....(as a movie)
