It was not one song in particular that got me hooked.
I must say it's such a blessing for
me to be a teenager in the 60s,
and the mid to late 60s in particular, when there were such
great music coming out (not even
in rock but in other contemporary
categories like bossa nova, folk , film music ... and what not)
In 1969,I was getting a bit tired of the pop charted songs. But when
i noticed that some of them like
Jim Webb's Maccarther Park, Promises Promises, I Say a little Prayer .... had that magic depth
in melody that turned me to the
so called "MOR" station on radio.
From then, those music got me to
"heaven", so to speak.
I must say BB's compositions were
starting to get more mature by
late 60s and early 70s (for example, the LP called Dionne
, with songs like Be Aware were
more sophisticated when compared with his writings like Raindrops
or I'll Never Fall in love Again.
His songs were getting better and
better from 1970 and recently
i listened to his albums again like
Sometimes late at night and
Woman , and they are WONDERFUL
What song first made you appreciate Bacharach & David?

I think his sound epitomizes that hip, swingin' cool sound of the mid-late '60s.
One of my all time favorite numbers from the Bacharach canon has to be the "Turkey Lurkey Time" number from the hit musical "Promises, Promises" (one of my all time favorites)...the musical dance instrumentation in that song and the way the tempo slowly picks up and up until it reaches the climax is awesome. The lyrics are a little hokey (no offense to Hal David, it is a novelty number after all) but the music is so energetic and infectious.
I wish I was old enough to have seen this done live. I think this show is long overdue for a revival. I missed the concert revival they staged in 1997 in New York.
