Burt concert in Henley

Post by nowmedical »

Did anyone see Burt play at the Henley festival last night?
There's a single pic in the Sunday Telegraph of him with Eliza Doolittle.

Here's a review of BB in Henley-on-Thames from a local newspaper:

Friday night at the Henley Festival was an extra special evening. Headlining on the floating stage was the legendary Burt Bacharach. Alan Tichmarsh gave the introduction declaring that Burt had composed ‘the sound track to all our lives’. The atmosphere was electric with anticipation as Alan thanked the members of the audience for their continued support of the Prince’s Foundation for Children and the Arts.

When Burt took to the stage with his band and trio of backing singers he was overwhelmed with the reception he was given, disclosing that this was only second time he’d played a daylight show in his long and distinguished career. “You lot look great!! Stunning!!, he commented to the fans of all ages, who packed the grandstand and deck chairs, about to be transported through each decade of their lives.

Following the introduction, he and the band played a selection of a dozen of his best known tunes to include What the World Needs Now, Walk on By, This Guy’s in Love with You, Trains & Boats & Planes and Do You Know the Way to San Jose. When Burt played I Just Don’t Know What to Do With Myself he talked about Dusty Springfield and his high regard for her. He joked with the audience that he was holding off on ‘that song’ which the bright and intelligent gathering guessed may have a connection with ‘raindrops!’

A guest appearance was made by Eliza Doolittle, a lovely young singer, originally billed for just one number. Burt however, having met Eliza earlier in the afternoon and been impressed with her voice, had insisted that she perform a second number with them. Eliza thanked Burt saying how privileged she felt to be included and commented emotionally, “for me this is a dream come true.”

Under a totally cloudless evening sky and with the full moon rising, the band eventually struck up Raindrops Keep Fallin’ on My Head which brought rapturous applause. Having explained how much he’d enjoyed working on the scores for so many films he and the band continued with a selection of his tunes from the movies including Alfie and What’s New Pussy Cat? Throughout the concert many of the audience were dancing and singing along to the unforgettable music having been lucky to share in these ‘magic moments!’

I've managed to find out the set-list for the Henley gig. The big surprise is the inclusion of 'Are You There (With Another Girl) as sung by the special guest Eliza Doolittle, who also performed 'Baby It's You'. There doesn't appear to have been any encores:

1.What the World Needs Now Is Love
2.Don't Make Me Over / Walk on by / This Guy's in Love with You / I Say a Little Prayer / Trains, Boats & Planes / Wishin' & Hopin' / Do You Know the Way to San Jose/(There's) Always Something There to Remind Me
3.Anyone Who Had a Heart
4.I Just Don't Know What To Do With Myself
5.Waiting for Charlie (To Come Home)
6.My Little Red Book
7.Baby It's You (with Eliza Doolittle)
8.Are You There (With Another Girl)
(with Eliza Doolittle)
9.Magic Moments / The Story Of My Life / The Blob / Tower of Strength
10.Message to Michael
11.Make It Easy on Yourself
12.On My Own
13. Close to You
14.The Look of Love / Arthur's Theme / What's New Pussycat / The World Is a Circle / April Fools / Raindrops Keep Fallin' on My Head / The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance / Making Love / Wives and Lovers / Alfie / A House is not a Home
