Sadly, Q is right: most young artistes in general-- after 1985 or so-- have suddenly felt it was OK to proceed making music without learning any of music's rules.

I'm speaking not only of the Blues and Jazz that Q refers to (and Wynton Marsalis before him, levelling a similar accusation), but general traditional music theory at all.

Sure, music is all about "expressing yourself", but one can express oneself much better knowing something about music theory and history... We mustn't "throw out the baby with the bathwater".

Undoubtedly a lot of young Black artistes feel that to create highly tonal, melodic and harmonic music today is tantamount to an intolerable "Uncle Tom-ism". AUTHENTIC modern, hip Black music, such thinking goes, is simply drumbeats, rapping, random scatting, vinyl scratching and vintage loop manipulation.

Such limited thinking is a shame.

Burt's new album gives the lie to the widely held, unchallenged assumption since 1985 or so, that tonality/harmony/melody is dead. ATT simply makes a lot of musicians out there just seem lazy by comparison...
