OK, so we've explored the Olivia N-J and Carpenters connections.
What about David Gates, who seems to float in the same rarified atmosphere as Burt:

Why does my brain link these two? Does anyone know a connection between Burt and DG (apart from his similarity to Christopher Cross)?
silly question 4

Well, I would say that Mr. Gates certainly has the experience in producing, writing, and arranging and was into the thick of it way before he was known to the general public. Being a "triple threat" as they call it....he certainly has the
proficiency to be in, as you say, the "strata" of a Bacharach...
He is more than just a songwriter, and that may be the common thread.

Who was that masked "Guitar Man"?
I recently read an interesting article on the Wrecking Crew that related how Larry Knechtel played the wah-wah solo in "Guitar Man".
It also contained an interesting statement to this effect. "Whether they realise it or not, most people's favourite band of the 1960s was the Wrecking Crew."
I just loved that, forget the often-pointless Beatles vs. Stones battlefield!
I think no-one will ever know for sure how much the Crew really played on.
