Re: mistakes that you can hear in Bacharach recordings. Naturally, they are few and far between, but I've found three humdingers so far.
For example, have a careful listen to the very first few bars of Captives of the Heart - sounds like someone dropped a large pair of cymbals at one point. When I get to five, I'll post the list here.
Has anyone else spotted anything in the huge BB archive?

Re: musical mistakes
I find it very hard to believe that a recording could go out with a mistake, considering Burt's talent, "ear", and perfectionism. I'm talking about the "master". How could a musical mistake get by Burt, of all people? If you can hear the mistake, don't you suppose that Burt would have heard it as well? By the way, I'm not saying you're wrong and I'm not criticizing you. I'm just wondering how this could happen. I remember on one of Dionne's vinyl albums, the song skipped just a little in one tiny space. I figured it was my particular album. Then, many, many years later, I heard the song on youtube, and the same skip was there. I was shocked! How would I have ever guessed so many years ago that I would one day discover in such a fashion that that particular skip was on some stranger's recording, too, and just happened to upload that particular song to youtube.
Anyhow, you're not even talking about this kind of mistake (in the reproduction of the "master").
So I don't know.

Re: musical mistakes
Enormous,
You're right..most of the mistakes have not been on the records, or Burt's fault, but have been technical issues...at someone else's hand...like what you described... also the beginning
of Don't Go Breaking My Heart... can't remember which version, it may have been Burt's..but the tapes not quite up to speed when it starts out, or something..(wobbly)...but this was a technical issue..
The only mistakes I remember, were usually done
"live" by the musicians...occasionally a trumpet player would miss a note in a solo or something....or the
intonation of the orchestra might be off, as on a
tv special I remember...the tuning of the orch was not good in one medley...but I think at the time it was considered a one-off...not to be heard again...
the master's ears on the records...they don't fail him...
and if there is a fluff, it's usually kept in because that "Take" has the best feel, under the time and constraints of the "then" recording process(live)-
time, and money.
