Burt vs. "suggestive dancing"

Post by grooverider »

In a Los Angeles Times artice from Monday, Oct. 27 about how high schools are starting to monitor the way high school students dance at events like the prom or high school holiday dances, Mickey Blaine, the dean of students at the private Pacific Hills School in West Hollywood states that if couples are caught gyrating, lights will be turned up or the music will be changed to Burt Bacharach or William Shatner singing "Mr. Tambourine Man".
"Dealing with it [suggestive dancing] in a light-hearted manner usually works", said Mr. Blaine.
Well, that's one way to expose the music of Burt Bacharach to the younger generations. I would hope some kids would really like what they hear, although, depending on the song, it may be a little hard to dance to.
That got me thinking, "What Burt Bacharach songs have ever be updated or done in a new or different manner?" The only ones I can think of are, "Walk on By" by The Stranglers, "Don't Make Me Over" by Sybil, "(There's) Always Something There To Remind Me" by Naked Eyes and "Close to You" by Ethyl Meatplow (which all are on the great "The Music of Burt Bacharach" 5 cd box set).

Maybe the dean is thinking of playing something like "Bond Street" to stop the kids from gyrating, but I hardly think that, say, Dusty singing "The Look of Love" would be an impediment to sensual dancing...now, Bill Shatner's "Mr. Tambourine Man" is a completely different matter!!

This (non-)story is almost as ridiculous as the town (in Australia, maybe?) that played Barry Manilow loudly past midnight to enforce a curfew.

What ridiculousness!
