"I`m a Better Man"

Post by Blair N. Cummings »

Considering that this was a hit during Burt`s brief collaborations with B. J. Thomas, does anyone (BtoB?) know if "I`m a Better Man" was originally intended for him?
If so, was it simply the technical differences between the two that sent the song to (of all people) "Engelbert Humperdinck"?
The latter did a nice job -indeed the only one I know- (begging further questions)but I smell a story here.
Anyone?

Here's David McAlmont's version of "I'm A Better Man":

(A very good version, I might add!)

Sorry, this doesn`t cut it for me. At least the EH version emitted fumes of a Bacharach arrangement. Why didn`t Burt ever do this himself, either on record or live? I still think it`s a stand-out song that has never received the treatment it deserves.
And my initial query remains.
