I have always been intrigued with them. There is something about them that would work in todays industry. They might have been one of the first musical acts that had personas that had a life of its own. They wore black stockings with holes, had weapons in their hair and under their tongues, hickies on their necks from guys, always chewing/smacking gum while talking with a strong bad ass new yorker attitude and accent to boost. I think their producer Shadow Morton kicks Phil Spector's ass( don't kick me off the board for that) . Walking in the sand, leader of the pack, give him a great big kiss are masterpieces for me that sounded like what the ronettes and crystals were doing but Shangri- Las had a dark edge that made their songs more interesting imo. Any fans of the girls on here?

I abhor soliloqy and extended spoken word in songs. The Shangri Las are one of my few exceptions. Authenicity goes a long way. They were like every other girl their age and wanted to be in love but they were girls from the wrong side of town and rather than hide it they embraced it and made it " good to be bad".]
Past Present and Future is masterpiece of spoken word that just realizes everything i said previously.
My fave song of theirs is a song that I imagine would be a good representation of what a Bacharach/Spector collabo would be like.
Take a listen and comment.

What do you get when you mix the Ronettes and Fifth Dimension. The Sweet sounds of summer.

Man could these girls make a dramatic song. One thing Mary Weiss always put her soul into a song even if she wasn't a trained vocalist.
