I've only just discovered that Bacharach's former boss Vic Damone handed in his dinner pail a couple of weeks ago. I suppose it was inevitable that he'd go on to record some of his erstwhile employee's best known songs after he became a famous composer, but although he had the smoothest, most natural vocal delivery of all the great post-war popular singers he's rather let down by a plodding arrangement on this Bacharach & David classic that could have been tailor-made for him.
