...A string of recent CDs reflect changes in what popular artists from country star Martina McBride to jazz veteran Herbie Hancock to pop diva Bette Midler are presenting as classics. Musicians are embracing the work not only of latter-day pop tunesmiths such as Burt Bacharach, Jimmy Webb and Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller, but of more contemporary singer/songwriters and artists with rootsier styles.

Bacharach, who recently released a collection of new songs called At This Time, understands the enduring allure of pre-rock gems. "There's a reason people go back to those old songs. Is it a yearning for melody? I don't know, but Rod Stewart is on his fourth successful collection now, right?"
